Cycling routes in Barcelona

Between the years of 2014 and 2016, UMA Projectes was retained by Barcelona’s municipal govern-ment to work on three independent cycling routes:
• Carril Bici Ronda Zero;
• Carril Bici Joan XXIII i Dr. Marañón;
• Carril Bici Ciutat Vella.

While each of them had its specific design challenges; they were all part of a local effort to decrease personal vehicles’ presence in Barcelona’s urban fabric.

The scope of work comprised different phases, from Assessment and Schematics to Construction Documents.

Assessment work included analysis of pre-existing conditions, site visits to verify current working drawings, and photo records.

At Schematic design, general plans containing possible routes for cyclists, pedestrians, vehicles and autobuses, and typical sections for transit lanes were presented. The projects addressed the connec-tions with the urban fabric and existing cycling routes, resolving junctions and intersections. Compati-bility to the public transit system, Bike Parking and Bike Sharing stations was also verified.

Construction documents included horizontal and vertical signage, traffic lights, urban furniture, bus stops, garbage containers, pavement and detailing.
